Federal and Provincial funding to support continued dance presentation on east coast

April 6, 2016 | The APA and its partner RADARTS (Réseau atlantique de diffusion des arts de la scène) have recently confirmed the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Province of Nova Scotia for its speciality dance project, Atlantic Moves.

The APA and RADARTS gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Province of Nova Scotia.

Begun as a pilot in 2011, Atlantic Moves was created to address a deficit of dance touring in the Atlantic region, with the specific goals of curatorial development for presenters, audience development for their communities and the presentation of Canadian dance artists. Since 2010-2011, the number of dance presentations has grown by 211%; attendance at dance presentations has increased by 121%; and the number of Atlantic Canadians participating in dance outreach activities has increased by 196%.

“Participating in the Atlantic Moves program has given me and my organization a great opportunity to expand our dance programming thereby extending a more thoughtful and robust dance offering to my community. Not only does the program financially support our organization in taking risks on contemporary dance presentation, it has also greatly increased my own capacity to curate, organize, and deliver performances, outreach activities, and audience development programs that stimulate, enrich, and deepen our audience’s appreciation of dance. My own professional learning about how to work in the dance discipline has been measurably deepened and today I feel much more connected and proficient in my role as a Canadian dance presenter. Our dance audiences are certainly developing and the Atlantic Moves program has contributed to this success in a measurable way.” Tim Yerxa, Fredericton Playhouse

Participating presenters have attended dance events across the country, including the Festival of New Dance (St. John's, NL), Canada Dance Festival (Ottawa, ON) and Parcours Danse (Montreal, QC).

Funding from Atlantic Moves has supported the presentation of dance artists and companies from Atlantic Canada and beyond, including Ballet BC, Bboyizm, Cas Public, Julie DuGuay and Mocean Dance.

“The APA is thrilled to see this program continue. It is a credit to the ground breaking work being done by the Atlantic Moves participants. We are happy that audiences from Georgetown, PEI to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL will continue to experience amazing Canadian contemporary dance in their own communities.” Laurie Gillis, Executive Director
